Gear is a really fun topic for me! I love the set up I shoot with right now. As I have grown as a Photographer my gear has changed and grown with me. So, without further ado here is my gear and why I chose each item.
Let’s start with my camera body. I actually shoot with two now, but let’s start with my main camera body. I just upgraded to the Canon RP in January of this year (2023) and I’m IN LOVE so far! I did a lot of research on this camera before I purchased it. I wanted something full frame, as my other 2 cameras are crop sensors (the sensor is the part of the camera that captures the light and creates the image) and the full frame has a larger sensor.
I went with Canon because it’s my first love. My grandpa introduced me to Canon cameras and I have shot with one ever since. I have used other brands and it just wasn’t for me. I feel that my Canon is super user friendly and I like that a lot.
The Canon EOS RP is a mirrorless camera. I decided to go mirrorless instead of another DSLR because it’s lighter and faster. The faster shutter was important to me because I take photos of children, and I love being able to include motion into my images without them being blurry. I enjoy the lighter, more compact feel of it as well because I am a small person and it just feels nice in my hand. It’s also very easy to keep with me in any situation.
Let’s talk about my second shooter. This would be my Canon EOS 40D. Now, this is an older model camera, I didn’t buy this camera new. The main reason I bought it was to upgrade to a more professional camera body from my Canon Rebel T3. This camera has been a WORK HORSE for me. It has been my main shooter since 2017 till January of this year. It is a bit more stocky than my RP, but I love him all the same.
Now let’s talk lenses! I have quite a few lenses in my collection, but go-to is my Canon 50mm f1.8. I actually bought this lens because I wanted to have a “prime lens.” This lens doesn’t zoom, to zoom I use my feet to move myself closer or further. I reach for this lens more than any other lens I own. It’s AMAZING for my Newborn Sessions, it’s compact and light which makes it great for in-home sessions. I even use this lens for my outdoor Family Sessions. It’s just an all around great lens.
I’ve come a long way from using my Canon Rebel T3 when I was a kid. I have kept all of the gear that I started with and it blows my mind how much I’ve grown as a Photographer. I can’t wait to add more to my stash!
